Modernizing Loudoun County’s Logo Identity

Led the research and development of the county's new logo mark and and built a comprehensive brand guideline for the new visual identity.

As the richest county and one of the fastest-growing regions in the United States, Loudoun County in Virginia is home to over 400,000 residents and is recognized for its scenic landscapes, rich historical roots, thriving business environment, and high-quality public services. 

Challenges

OUTDATED LOGO

Loudoun County’s traditional seal had become outdated and difficult to apply consistently across modern platforms and media.

INCONSISTENCY IN BRANDING

In addition to the aging logo, the county’s overall brand lacked cohesiveness and consistency. With numerous departments and offices, maintaining a unified visual identity across all government communications had become increasingly challenging.

Capturing the Essence of Loudoun County

Recognized for its scenic wineries and farmland, rich history, and high-income demographic, the county required a logo that embodied these defining characteristics.

TYPE RESEARCH

The Design team explored various typefaces to best reflect Loudoun County’s distinct culture and prestige. The new logo needed to be legible, clear, and versatile for a range of applications.

LOGOTYPE

The Design team developed a typographic logo that maintained the county’s official identity while enhancing usability.

THE EMBLEM

To complement the typography, the designer also developed an abstract, miniature version of the county’s traditional seal. This emblem serves as a focal point of the logo, preserving the county’s heritage while aligning with a modernized visual identity.

Building a Versatile Logo Package

The new logo system was designed to be adaptable across different applications and departments. To ensure flexibility, the designer created multiple variations:

Developing a Comprehensive Brand Guideline 

To support the new identity, a brand guideline document was developed, providing essential direction for the county’s internal web and publication teams.​

The guideline includes:

  • Approved county colors and recommended pairings

  • Logo variations and usage guidelines

  • Department sublogo specifications

MODERN IDENTITY

The rebrand successfully established a modern, unified visual identity that bridges Loudoun County’s historical heritage with its forward-looking innovation. The new logo system brought clarity, consistency, and scalability across all departments.

COHESIVE BRANDING

Through a logo architecture and clear brand guidelines, the county’s communications team can now maintain a cohesive look and feel across digital platforms, signage, publications, and public materials. Logo is continued to be used and loved today.
